Kaka’s vision

“To Contribute in reduction of CO2 levels in the atmosphere from 380 ppm to 280 ppm through Photosynthesis for the betterment of all living beings & survival of our mother earth”

With Kaka’s vision VRTI has initiated a project on Rukmavati river of Mandvi taluka for integrated river basin management. The Rukmavati Basin Management project is aimed to conceptualize River Basin Management in Arid to Semi Arid and geologically complex region like Kachchh. To achieve the aim following objectives have been framed

  • To understand potential of various natural resources like water, land, vegetation etc. within the basin and aware the stake holders about the situation
  • To understand issues and challenges of the river basin management
  • To understand existing socio-economic status from its problems and perspective point of view
  • To institutionalize decentralized but people’s centered resource management mechanism

Rukmavati river basin is located in Mandvi taluka of Kachchh district (Exhibit-1). The whole basin is spreads over about 600 sqkm area. Total 46 villages are habituated in the basin along with a town Mandvi (Taluka Headquarter).

There will be three phases of the entire project such as Planning phase, Implementation phase and Monitoring phase. Two approaches (01) integrated and (02) participatory will be adopted to execute the project. Mechanism of river basin management by institutionalization process is started with planning phase itself. That can be judged through a capacity building of rural youth and constitution of river basin management committee of stake holders. Main activities during the implementation phase will be water harvesting and management, Soil moisture conservation, soil reclamation etc.

We have started planning phase of the project with mapping of entire basin. Various maps like 1.Base map on GIS (Geographical Information System), 2.Drainage map, 3. Geological map has been prepared. We have collected revenue maps of all the villages and scanned which are being digitized and georeferenced.

Data collection

We have collected village level data from Panchayat i.e Agriculture, Live stock data, etc., Water level measurement and water samples collected from basin area to know the present situation. Litholog and groundwater related data has been collected from GWRDC (Ground Water Research and Development Corporation) and SIPC (Salinity Ingress Prevention Circle). Satellite images for pre and post monsoon period have been purchased from NRSA Hyderabad.

Institutional arrangements

We have selected 17 young boys from Rukmavati Basin and started to train them on subjects like hydro-geology, agriculture, animal husbandry, livelihood creation etc.. They will become Green brigadier of this basin. Their role will be to guide and motivate basin area people for the holistically planning & Management of Rukmavati River Basin. For guidance we have formed supporting team from our senior group and orient about the project.

Awareness generation and planning for water harvesting

We have arranged meeting with stake holders to discuss the issues of Rukmavati basin. Pujya Kaka has presented the concept of River basin management and invited suggestions from the stake holder’s group regarding the sustainable development of the basin area.

For water harvesting activities we had meeting with Chairman of Sardar Sahbhagi Jal sanchay yojna and engineers of Govt. Department. Under this project 51 structures have been sanctioned in the basin area. Technical survey for all the sites, design and estimation work is completed.
