It was observed that the aged cattle are sent to panjarapols (cattle ponds) or to slaughter houses. The frequent droughts and scarcity conditions compelled the cattle-owners to move out of Kutch in search of greener pastures. VRTI therefore adopted a multi-faceted cattlecare programmes such as breed improvement, production of nutritive cattle-feed and compost. As a result as breed improved and average milk yield per cow increased substantially, it encouraged collective efforts in dairy -farming.
